Christian James-Watkins

I am an enthusiastic and dedicated LLB/LLM/LPC graduate hoping to qualify as a lawyer specialising in childrens law. I have been working closely with the Royal Courts of Justice to ensure that children and young people are not negatively impacted by reporting in the family courts, the draft guidance I was involved in developing has now been made Practice Guidance by the President. I have written a number of reports and been involved in a variety of research, some of which you can find below. Although my professional interests vest in family law, I have enjoyed working in the financial crime department of Deloitte on anti-money laundering and ani-terrorist financing. I am still interested in persuing a training contract and qualifying as a solicitor.

I have enjoyed running my own photography company on and off for a number of years, you can find a link to my website below. If you have an event coming up then get in contact with me and I will see what I can do for you. I also enjoy volunteering, I have been with NYAS for over 10 years as well as having volunteered with Save the Children.

Publications

This blog follows Christian's volunteering, publications, and general interests. It is updated periodically and can cover any number of areas, make sure to check back for the latest information and updates.

All posts are written by Christian and reflect his personal opinions, they are not necessarily reflective of the organisations mentioned.

Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of the Family Division, formally made "Anonamymisation and avoidance of the identification of children & the treatment of explicit descriptions of the sexual abuse of children in judgements intended for the public arena" practice guidance for judges in the Family Courts.

When Leaving Care - A survey examining the experiences of care leavers in Blaenau Gwent

The aim of the consultation was to explore through one to one questionnaires and an on-line survey young people’s experiences of leaving care. The results of the consultation will provide:
• An insight of personal experiences of the leaving care system.
• An overview of support offered to young people during the leaving care process.

This research is written by Christian.

This guidance looks at how to better anonymise judgements to be published in the public domain, it was commissioned as a direct response to the previous research.

Christian was a member of the advisory group considering, and drafting the above guidance.

This research considers access to independent advocacy for children and young people in care, secure estate and mental health units.

Christian was a member of the National Children’s Advocacy Consortium considering the above issues.

This analysis of media in the family courts discusses the risks of 'jigsaw identification', possible contraventions of the European Convention on Human Rights and United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, failings of the current systems anonymisation practices of judgements placed on BAILII, and children and young people's objections to media in the family courts.

This research is written by Christian.

This research considers the courts current approach to anonymising judgements published on BAILII, and how easy it is to identify subjects of cases using social media.

Christian is one of the anonymous young people who participated this consultation.

This research considers children and young persons' views on the potential of media gaining greater access to the family courts.

Christian is one of the anonymous young people who participated in this consultation.

Interests

Apart from being a volunteer for NYAS, I enjoy running my own photography company. I have taken photographs at a variety of events for Bangor Law School, Titan Sount and Light, Coleg Gwent Student's Union, and Bridgend College Student's Union. You can find links to my work on my website, CJ Photography.

I also enjoy watching air displays, and tracking aircraft. I am a conrtibutor to 360Radar and Flight Radar 24; when I was at Bangor University I was a member of the Valley Aviation Society.

I run a few websites and have some basic coding knowledge, I recently acquired a qualification Programming 101: An introduction to python for educataiors from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

I still enjoy archery, although I have not shot in a while.
